Start with the network
Consider an RMU where a compact set of cable-switching and transformer-protection functions suits the network. Consider a metal-clad lineup where feeder protection, access, metering and expansion need individual panels. Check the offered ratings and arrangement in either case.
Mark the job of every feeder
An 11 kV site can have a utility intake, several distribution transformers, large motors and a future generation connection. These circuits need different switching and protection duties. Mark each one on the single-line diagram before requesting a cabinet size or a series name.
A ring main unit describes a compact distribution application and equipment family. Metal-clad describes a construction arrangement. The terms do not divide every product into two exclusive groups, and an RMU can include circuit-breaker functions. Compare the actual circuit functions offered, including which device interrupts fault current.
Use the same questions for both offers
Send both suppliers the same feeder schedule. Separate normal operating current from the short-circuit duty established by the network study. Include the utility metering arrangement and the required protection functions, particularly where more than one source or embedded generation can feed a fault.

Describe how a supply interruption will be handled
A ring connection provides alternative network paths, but it does not establish automatic or uninterrupted transfer. State the normal open point, permitted switching arrangements and the party authorised to operate the network. Any restoration scheme needs the utility and protection engineer to confirm how it will work.
For a multi-feeder industrial intake, describe the circuits that must remain available during planned work. Ask the supplier to identify the compartments that can be accessed under the proposed isolation conditions. Have the engineer check the service-continuity classification against that maintenance task.
Look beyond the cabinet footprint
Compare installed layouts with cable bending, trench openings, termination tools and equipment handling space included. A smaller enclosure can still need significant room around it. The internal-arc classification and pressure-release route also have to suit the room and the sides accessible to personnel.
Ask about the maintenance of mechanisms, auxiliary supplies and protection devices as well as the main insulation system. A sealed compartment does not remove the need to inspect every other part of the installation. Obtain the operating instructions for the particular unit, rather than relying on a general maintenance-free statement.
Leave a clear route for expansion
If another transformer is planned, describe that feeder now and reserve the physical access needed to add it. Record whether extension needs a shutdown, special jointing components or manufacturer attendance. A spare space in a room is useful only when the selected equipment can actually be extended into it.
